Abstract

Gift giving is a universal phenomenon, but in certain domains it should be distinguished from a bribe. When is a gift a bribe? This entry answers these questions and clarifies the conceptual ambiguity of the terms gift and bribe. After briefly reviewing some general characteristics of gift giving, we discuss four situations which we call social gift, bureaucratic gift, bureaucratic bribe, and social bribe. Finally, we propose two main elements that help clarify the ambiguity: an organizational dimension and hidden non-transparent transaction.
