Abstract

The pre-colonial arrangements that had been practised by the Aboriginal peoples living in what is now South Australia were usurped in December 1836. The colonial imposition of government in its modern sense of authority constitutionally exercised through permanent public institutions arrived in South Australia with Governor John Hindmarsh, though it had been shaped by prior decisions made in London.
