Abstract

In the June 1919 edition of the official South Australian Department of Mines Mining Review, L.C.E. Gee, Chief Register of Mines, published a wide-ranging report on the 'Betterment Principle' then in operation at the Moonta and Wallaroo Mines. Building on an article penned by H. Lipson Hancock, 'Welfare Work in the Mining Industry', which had appeared the previous year in the Australian Chemical Engineering and Mining Review, Lionel Gee in his report described the welfare system that had reached its high point on northern Yorke Peninsula in the years before and during the Great War.
