Abstract

The middle of the year is a time of considerable anticipation within the journal community. At this time, Clarivate announces the previous year's Journal Impact Factors (JIFs) in their Journal Citation Reports.1 The JIF, calculated from data collected within their Web of Science platform, is the most widely recognised metric for quality of peer-reviewed journals and, by association, the articles that these journals publish. Numerically, the JIF represents the number of citations in the course of the year to papers published during the prior 2 years, divided by the number of articles published in those 2 years.
