Abstract
The Reese Memorial Lecture was delivered on 4 October 2017 on the Strand Campus,
King’s College London.
Many thanks to Dr Ian Henderson, Director of the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies,
Kings College, and to Dr Simon Sleight for their invitation to present the 2017 Trevor Reese
Memorial lecture in Australian History this evening. I am greatly honoured to do so. I wish
to warmly thank and acknowledge Hilary Reese and the family of the late Professor Trevor
Reese, after whom this lecture is named.
