Highly Sensitive Metamaterial-Inspired Biosensor Using Meander Split Ring Resonator

Abstract

A highly sensitive metamaterial-inspired biosensor based on a meander split ring resonator (SRR) is proposed. The proposed biosensor has high sensitivity by introducing a meander structure into the SRR, where a stronger electromagnetic (EM) field confinement is achieved. Experimental characterizations of the proposed biosensor using water-ethanol mixtures successfully validate the concept. This compact, simple and high-sensitivity microwave biosensor can provide pathways to applications such as microfluidic assays and multiplexed lab-on-a-chip read-out.
