Abstract

This narrative review explores the history of the evolution of diversity, and diversity management, in the hospitality industry during the 18th and 19th centuries. The study’s findings indicate that multiple factors influenced hospitality firms to employ a diverse workforce. These factors include the sector’s growth, the creation of new jobs within the hospitality sector, and global migration trends. In addition, World War I and World War II played a major role in growing the number of diverse employees in the sector’s workforce. Furthermore, it was noted that the birth of the Civil Rights Act led to the development of diversity management practices. Finally, this study offers future directions to embed historical research approaches to advance the hospitality diversity literature.
