Abstract

The reality of providing an inclusive, differentiated approach to the range of learners in children and youth sport settings is challenging. Two key ideas central to understanding how to develop physical skills for all abilities are differentiation and inclusion. Differentiation is as an education concept enabling consideration of approaches to addressing physical skill development for all abilities in sport settings. In this paper, we take inclusion to be appropriate consideration of individuals with of all abilities in PE and sport settings in appropriate physical skill development. The concept of differentiation provides a guide to the ways a teacher or coach intentionally designs for inclusion. Inclusion Style-E from The Spectrum of Teaching Styles (The Spectrum) provides PE teachers and sport coaches with pedagogical direction that promotes the empowerment of the teacher and coach in selecting tasks conditions that cater to the player developmental readiness, interest and motivation; features that are representative of an athlete/player-centred coaching approach and of a mastery motivational climate in PE and sport.
