Abstract

This chapter looks at how we learn first and second languages. We start by looking at the developmental stages and processes of First Language Acquisition in all human languages. We also look at childhood bilingualism and the main theories that explain how we learn first languages. We then explore the main theories that explain how we learn second languages. This chapter also addresses instructed Second Language Acquisition in classroom settings, its key concepts and practical considerations for successful second language instruction.
