Abstract
Introduction: Patients affected by cancer often require access to complex care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during their cancer treatment and recovery, accounting for 15-20% of all ICU admissions. However, the impact of an ICU admission and critical illness among cancer survivors recovery and quality of life is less known in the literature.
Objective: To systematically identify and evaluate the evidence on the impact on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) overtime in patients affected by cancer who have survived a critical illness after an admission to the ICU.
Methods: Following the Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRSIMA) guidelines, three databases were searched including: Medline, CINHAL and EMBASE for relevant literature.
Results: A total of 11 publications met eligibility criteria and were included in the review for analysis. Ten publications were quantitative in design, and one was qualitative. HRQoL domains most frequently reported in patients affected by cancer after discharge from ICU included physical function limitations, physical symptoms, anxiety and depression.
Conclusions: HRQoL decreased immediately after the admission to ICU with a gradual increase in the three to 12 months following. Patients affected by cancer are vulnerable to physical limitations, pain and social isolation after an admission to ICU.
