Abstract
Lithium has been a first-line treatment for the manic phase of bipolar disorder for over 70 years. Its primary mechanism, presumed to be in the brain itself, remains unknown. We now present evidence that lithium alters brain function via a primary action in the gut, with modulation of brain function via the gut brain axis.
