Abstract
I recently completed my PhD thesis “Towards Effective Supervision for the Legal Profession: A Focus on Supervised Practice”. This thesis was guided by the question: “What are the implications of the legal profession’s current conception of, and approach to, supervision during supervised legal practice?” The starting point for my research was the provision found in legal profession legislation in all Australian states and territories requiring newly admitted lawyers to complete a period of supervised legal practice. That period is two years for those admitted via a practical legal training course and 18 months for those admitted via a traineeship. In Victoria, the relevant provision is s49 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
