Abstract

The objective functions required to facilitate the parameter estimation (PEST) program for the hydrologic simulation program FORTRAN (HSPF) watershed model were identified. The effectiveness of different calibration objective functions was studied on the basis of the width of the predictive confidence interval, as calculated by PEST's nonlinear predictive analyzer. A definitive calibration endpoint was achieved by running PEST in parameter estimation mode, to search for and identify the parameter set that minimizes the objective function. The results show that parameter uniqueness can be reduced by bringing more information into the calibration process and by presenting it to PEST in a way that allows PEST to make the most use of it.
