Abstract

Groundwater recharge beneath native vegetation in the Western Lands of New South Wales is less than 0.3 mm yr-1. Following clearing, recharge beneath annual agricultural crops and pastures increases by between one and two orders of magnitude. Clearing for agriculture in the Western Lands, however, has been much more restricted than in these two states, particularly on sandy soils, and so salinisation will proceed more slowly than in most other areas of southern Australia.
