In the Pink: Goes to Gay Pride

    Abstract

Apologies for the break in our regular Pink Parent coverage, but we've been recovering from a massive Pink overdose! Yes, my family and I were in that mecca for Pinkness, none other than sexy San Francisco. We took in Chinatown, Alcatraz, Coit tower, the cable cars on Powell Street, the seals on Pier 39, and oh - did I forget to mention Gay Pride? Yes, your very own Pink Parent correspondent just happened to be there during Gay Pride festivities (last week of June, for the uninitiated). Noe Valley, Castro Street, dykes and poofs galore - we saw it all. Now, before you, Dear Reader, turn revoltingly green with envy, let me remind you that all these sights were viewed across a haze of half-eaten bananas and Spiderman gear (eg the everyday detritus of our 1.5 and 5 year olds). Yes, there are times when being a parent poses a special - ahem! - challenge (like when you want to hit Opening Night at the Film Festival, and no way do you have a babysitter). But never mind, we were lucky to be there and everyone had a ball, even if we weren't able to make it to every queer event we wanted to.

Being in SF as a queer family during the unique time of Gay Pride made us appreciate how well Pink people are catered for there - especially Pink families. Though occasionally we were a little obvious with our strollers and a tantrum or two (that was me - but hey everyone was lining up for Lesbian Pulp-0-Rama Goes to Sweden! and I didn't want to miss out), mostly the city exuded warmth and friendliness. All in all we discovered Pink Parent-friendly sites sufficient to keep even the most energetic among us busy for a whole year.
