Abstract
This chapter defines a breast smear which is insufficient for diagnosis and is based on a cytological assessment of the material on the slide. The factors affecting the inadequate rate include the inherent qualities of the lesion, the expertise of the operator and the quality of the smear. The category does not require a specific number of epithelial cells to be present, but does require clinical-radiological correlation with the cytology (the triple test).
