Abstract
This introductory chapter sets out the scope and mean ideas present within the rest of the book. Drawing on the combined narrative of the editors, from both a teaching and academic perspective, the chapter begins by explaining the origins of this book, before seeking to situate it within wider debates about empowering teachers and the need for democratic education, both for schools and its role in wider society. As part of this, the innovative nature of the book-as a combination of the voices of teachers and researchers-is explained. For international readers, a brief description of the Australian education system is provided, as well as a useful summary of key terms from within the system.
