Abstract

No-one would argue that it was German writers, whether in the East or the West, who provided the crucial impetus for the revolutionary events of 1989. If anything, German intellectuals were left to ponder from a distance, and with a combination of bewilderment and despair, the extraordinary pace of change. Their relegation to the modest role of observers found expression in a piece of grafitti in Berlin which taunted, 'Die Intelligenz lauft mir nach bin schneller'.
