Abstract

Fatigue in the transportation industries is closely linked to health conditions and the poor health of drivers/vehicle operators. Although the complex and multifaceted contributors to poor health and fatigue in this sector are well known, worker health and fatigue management is currently viewed by organisations through the lens of acute safety risk prevention, and places responsibility on individual workers. Through discussion of three key transport industries of rail, road, and reef tourism, this chapter considers the gaps in current approaches and what can be done to implement an improved, holistic health management system that reduces fatigue at the systems level, leading to sustainable change and worker well-being.
