Abstract

This itinerant preacher, kinsman of Jesus, and messianic precursor cried out in the wilderness preparing the way for the Lord, despite Roman and Jewish opposition. Following Jesus’ baptism, the importance of John the Baptist decreased and ended in his beheading at the behest of Herod, Herodias, and Salome. In film, his severed head symbolizes the rage of the rejected and the triumph of female eroticism.
