Abstract

Examination of emotional intelligence (EI) is nowadays a promising research area of psychology. Several instruments, serving as tools for the assessment of EI, are currently being adopted in Hungarian. One of these instruments is the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS-HU). Objective: The aim of the current research was the adoption of the WLEIS-HU in two independent samples to determine its internal consistency, factor structure and convergent validity. Methods: A sample of 157 university students (mean age = 20.9 yrs [SD = 1.56]; males 38.9%) and another sample of 430 junior male soccer players (mean age = 14.0 yrs [SD = 0.82]) were tested. Convergent validity has been tested on a third sample consisting of 76 university students (mean age = 23.5 yrs [SD = 3.39], males 40.8%). The factor structure of the WLEIS-HU was evaluated by using confirmatory factor analysis. Results: According to the results, a modified 14 item version of the Hungarian scale is feasible for the gauging of the EI (CMIN/df = 1.846; RMSEA (CI90) = 0.038 [0.031-0.045]; CFI = 0.935; TLI = 0.917). Conclusion: The WLEIS-HU is an appropriate instrument for assessing four components of the EI (self-emotions appraisal, others' emotional appraisal, use of emotion, and regulation of emotion).
