Abstract

Chess-loving, Jewish-American, and United Kingdom expatriate, Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999) was a photographer, auteur film director, producer, and screenwriter whose canon consisted of sixteen documentary and genre films ranging from historical dramas to sports, science fiction to war, black comedy to horror, epics to romance, and crime to religion (involving priests, scripture-quoting, Jesus imagery, occultism, and the numinous). With lifetime achievement awards from the directors’ guilds of America (1997) and Britain (1999), plus a Career Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival (1997), this cold and detached perfectionist honed his professional craft outside the Hollywood studio system. A non-believer in anthropomorphic monotheism, but sympathetic to pseudo-atheism and scientific supernaturalism, he primarily pursued realism tinged with pessimism, utilized inspired music and songs, pioneered several technical innovations, and showcased many penetrating philosophical perspectives.
