Abstract
In the 1920s and 1930s, young women seeking visibility in the public spaces of urban centres around the world identified themselves as 'modern'. For some of these young women, visibility and modernity marked a path to authority, influence and power. This paper calls for further examination of the connections between the new global models of youthful femininity, and the visibility of a minority of young Spaniards committed to social change. It takes as its case study the propagandist and sex reformer, Hildegart (1914-1933).
