Abstract

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the more a person mentions the word 'leadership', the less likely they are to exhibit its characteristics. Similar maxims can be summoned about integrity, trust, decency and respect.

Currently, 717 Linkedin Learning courses are available to instruct 'leaders' how to be ethical, compassionate and - indeed - human.

In our crisis-laden university sector, the suit worn by leaders often reveals more personality than they possess. When we strip the Key Performance Indicators, the vision statements, the strategic plans, the away days and performance development reviews from contemporary university leadership, what is left beyond fear, narcissism, loathing and resentment?
