Abstract
Lexis is a very large subject, indeed a dauntingly large one. The ten-volume Scottish National Dictionary, entirely devoted to presenting the vocabulary of Scots since 1700,reminds us how large the topic is. At the same time, it is precisely because we have SND as well as The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, The Oxford English Dictionary and the very useful synopsis provided by The Concise Scots Dictionary that writing on the vocabulary of Scots since 1700 becomes possible.
