Abstract

Liberal nationalist multiculturalism combines the values of cultural diversity with those of liberalism and nationalism. The central thinker in this vein is Will Kymlicka, although significant contributions have been made by Yael Tamir, Joseph Raz, and others. This chapter sets out the central features of this school of thought, which include a paramount commitment to liberal goods, in particular personal autonomy (although Tamir and Raz are also interested in value pluralism), a link between autonomy and cultural identity, in particular national identity, and a case for cultural rights that extends beyond majority national groups to national and non-national cultural minorities. Criticisms of the position address its liberal, nationalist, and multiculturalist components. A final assessment is offered in the conclusion.
