Abstract

Background

The history of illegal hacking of commercial matter transmission (d-mat_ is as old as the technology itself (see 'Patent Law vs Prototyping in the Age of the Replicator'). One particular class of crime raises the spectre of perpetrators altering their appearance in order both to deceive their victims and to evade capture. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the social context in which such crimes are committed and the tools employed in pursuit of the crime.
