The average person in our society is a drinker. More than 40% of Australians drink more than once a week. The 2004 National Drug Strategy Household Survey established that 90% of people aged 14 and older have tried alcohol at some stage. The percentage of Australians with a clinical problem with alcohol, classified as an alcohol use disorder, is 6.5% (3.5% with dependence, 3.0% with harmful use [ICD-10]).
