Abstract

Question What is an acute gout attack , and what are NSAIDs ? Gout arises from the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints and usually presents as self-limited episodes of acute arthritis . NSAIDs are drugs that reduce pain and inflammation , but may increase the risk of ulcers and GI bleeding . Selective cyclooxygenase (COX-2) inhibitors are a subgroup of NSAIDsthat cause fewer stomach ulcers. Basis Date of investigation . The study is an update of a review that was initially published in 2014 and revised on August 28, 2020. Study characteristics and key results This review of 28 trials has 3,406 participants. The majority were men (69% to 100%) between the ages of 44 and 66 with cases of acute gout lasting less than 48 hours. One study with 30 participants compared placebo with an NSAID , 13 studies with 518 participants compared one NSAID with another, 6 studies with 1,244 participants compared NSAIDswith selective COX-2 inhibitors, 5 studies with 772 participants compared glucocorticoids with NSAIDs , 1 study with 225 participants compared interleukin-1 inhibitors with NSAIDs , 1 study with 163 participants compared acupuncture and infrared radiation with NSAIDs , and 1 study with 399 participants. participants compared colchicine with NSAIDs .
