Abstract
Born in New York in 1956, Mel Gibson shot to public prominence as the avenger cop, Max Rockatansky, in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy (1979, 1981, 1985). Gibson then switched continents and reinvented himself, as LAPD detective Martin Riggs, in the Lethal Weapon films (1987, 1989, 1992, 1998). These macho cop sagas showcased Gibson’s penchant for physical comedy and personal eccentricity, while firmly establishing his international reputation as a bankable action star. These two iconic characters were peppered among a string of respectable performances in a variety of genres.
