Abstract

This project report provides a synthesis of existing information on the presence of microplastics in coastal environments of South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. It also identifies major knowledge gaps, cross-sector priority needs and recommendations to improve monitoring, support policymaking, management and research. Research priorities address the need to (i) harmonise methodologies to reduce discrepancies and enhance data comparability, ii) understand the source and environmental occurrence of microplastics, and iii) demonstrate the risk of harm to organisms and ecosystems.
