Background: Midwifery is underpinned by the moral and ethical responsibility to uphold a woman's right to autonomy and self-determination in childbearing. It is these key tenets that speak to a woman-centred approach1. The key to upholding woman-centred care is midwifery partnership where there is recognition of, support for and facilitation of reciprocity, mutual awareness and shared decision-making.
