Abstract

Average monthly prices paid for water entitlements from 1997 to 2007 in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District are analysed to estimate price elasticities. Demand for permanent water entitlements appears to be most influenced by demand for such entitlements in the previous month and seasonal factors. No statistically significant relationship was found between the prices of water entitlements and demand, making price elasticity estimates unreliable. We conclude that other variables that could not be modelled play a more important role in influencing the trade of water entitlements than previously thought. Further research in this area, using individual irrigator surveys, will be needed.
