Abstract

This guideline has been developed to assist in the diagnosis and management of people presenting with symptoms suggestive of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), or with confirmed ACS. ACS are conditions involving sudden reduced blood flow to the heart. The main types are acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and unstable angina.

The guideline recommendations are based on contemporary evidence and are intended to meet the needs of clinicians caring for the majority of people, recognising that recommendations should inform, but not replace, clinical judgement.

Shared decision making is recommended and should be based on the person’s values, preferences and circumstances. Clear communication with the person and their support people is critical to these discussions.

This guideline was developed in consultation with a broad range of clinical experts and people with lived experience, representing different geographic regions, sex, genders, ethnicities, clinical settings and perspectives. Organisations, including those with people with lived experience interests and professional expertise, were involved.
