Abstract
This article pursues the question of whether Nietzsche's aristocratic notion of culture entails a politics of domination. Against the commonly held belief that Nietzsche's vision of a future aristocracy is a precursor to authoritarian, perhaps totalitarian ideologies, this article investigates the notions of aristocratic society, order of rank and responsibility in order to show that his vision of future nobility is directed towards the overcoming of forms of domination and exploitation found in modern mass society by cultivating a new sense of individual freedom as responsibility.
