Abstract
A wedge-tailed eagle leaned over the ewe, bouncing on its claws to peck out an eyeball. It turned sharply towards him, revealing a cream belly and shrewd eyes, its feathered mullet fluttering in the light breeze. Albert felt a surge of envy as it took off with a startled creak and flap; as it rose and circled; and as it powered down the valley towards freedom. Looking down at the ewe, prostrate, like a pile of woolly rags on a bald patch of dirt, he felt shame.
