Abstract

Existing guidelines for the management of agitation in intensive care units do not provide specific recommendations for non-pharmacological interventions to prevent and treat agitation in patients. This lack of clinical practice guidance can lead to ineffective and inconsistent care and treatment, increase the risk of adverse events, result in overuse of medications, and lead to frustration and burnout among staff. This clinical guideline aims to provide healthcare professionals with recommendations that can complement pharmacological treatment of agitation and thereby improve the care and treatment of patients in intensive care units.
