Abstract

I want to talk about “news entertainment”…

What a chilling invention that is.

As far as I’m concerned, the two words don’t belong together. When I was young, I didn’t look to Rob Kelvin or Kevin Crease for entertainment. I had Seinfeld and Power Rangers for that. George Donikian was a little more fun, but I understood that the whole point of the news was to inform me, my friends, and my family. Everyone else had the same attitude. News was about sharing factual information. That was it. News was supposed to be dispassionate. It was supposed to be dry. It was supposed to be…well, a little like bran. Nobody needs to add sweet chilli sauce, blue cheese and Thousand Island dressing to bran. You eat it because it’s good for you...
