Abstract
A necessary and sufficient condition for a velocity field to be steady in the spatial description when the motion is defined in a material description is derived. The derivation depends on an application of the theory of dynamical systems. Secondly, relations between the material description of a motion, which gives rise to a steady velocity field, and symmetric hyperbolic equations are derived and a conservation law for steady flow kinematics is established.
