Abstract

In the representation theorem for the stored energy function of a hyperelastic material, it is necessary to determine a subgroup g^*₁ of the symmetry group g of the stress tensor. It is the purpose of this note to study the construction of g^*₁ and its relation to the other subgroups ot g, viz. the commutator subgroup g_c and the orthogonal subgroup g₀.
