Abstract
South Australia’s Pregnancy Advisory Centre (PAC) is the only publicly-funded standalone abortion service in Australia. Opened in 1992, the PAC’s original operating model of high quality service delivery combined with advocacy was created by feminist activists, public servants, health workers and political leaders, often in the face of strong opposition from anti-abortion groups. Today the PAC continues to offer high quality abortion services at no cost to patients, and is a public health service unmatched anywhere in Australia.
One of South Australia’s Treasures is a history of the PAC’s origins and early achievements up to 2001 and draws on written records from the period as well as 13 new oral history interviews.
