Abstract

The ‘Optometry Māori Health Curriculum Framework’ was developed for the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (OCANZ) by Iwi United Engaged Limited (IUE), a Māori owned and operated business that aims to provide tikanga and kawa guided, culturally informed services that advance Māori health and well-being. The team at IUE have over 25 years of community engagement with Māori within academia, research, and clinical services across a spectrum of health care fields, including optometry and ophthalmology. They are leaders in tertiary curriculum framework development and design, having previously developed the framework for Te Tohu Paetahi Tikanga Rangatira aa-Tapuhi, Bachelor of Nursing Māori, at Manukau Institute of Technology. OCANZ would like to thank the team at IUE; Misty Edmonds, Tūwharetoa (Kaiwhakahaere Matua - CEO), Dr Kev Lamar Turepu Roos, Saami, Ngāti Toarangatira (Kaiwhakahaere Kirimana - 2IC and Contract Manager) and Stephanie Shaker, Tūwharetoa, Ngapuhi (Kaiwhakahaere Pakihi -Business Manager) for their guidance, expertise and Mātauranga, (wisdom) in the development of the Optometry Māori Health Curriculum Framework.
