Abstract
Some days, Gert tells herself it's the blisters scaring folk away from her stall on Barradoon harbour. The fresh yellow clusters in the crooks of her mouth. The older, darker beads blotching her lips. Her pink-weeping smiles. Lately, Gert doesn't smile much. What a sight she makes, chap-cheeked and salt-scoured from working on her Da's rented trawler. The spotlights they rigged to its mast are so much harsher than daylight, glaring on Gert's every flaw. The grease dreading her locks, the crows-feet stamped round her eyes, the calluses and cracks roughing her hands. Her bloody, gods-awful kisser.
