Abstract

The famous Flemish Baroque painter Justus Sustermans (AD 1597–1681) depicted the various stages of Grand Duke Ferdinando II de’ Medici's (AD 1610–1670) smallpox. Sustermans portrayed a 16-year-old Ferdinando II on the 7th (October 19, 1626) and 9th day (October 21, 1626) of the infection (Figure 1a,b).
