Abstract
If I were to tell you that life is brutal, that there is very little justice in this world, that innocents suffer and die every single day, you may nod your head sagely. Too true, too true. And you might console me that we are all in this together, cherishing our shared humanity.
If I were to tell you that I, in particular, have suffered tragedy, you may voice a concerned, Oh? – inviting me to share my troubles. And I might haltingly reveal that my son was killed in a car accident last year, and that since then not a minute of my waking hours has gone by when I do not regret ever getting into a car. That my anguish is so intense at times that I want to smash my head in. And then perhaps you would quiver with compassion and wish it were not so, and though you cannot lift my burden, perhaps in listening you can ease it a little, for you are a sensitive soul.
