Abstract
I am writing this Perspectives piece looking back over 30þ years of working in the area of quality improvement in nursing and health care. In 1987, I took up a new position as a Research Assistant at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in London, working on the Standards of Care programme, under the leadership of Dr Alison Kitson. It was the start of an amazing journey, observing and learning about leadership to mobilise and facilitate improvements in the delivery of health care. As I reflect back on this experience, I can honestly say that I have been privileged to work alongside inspirational colleagues functioning as leaders in many different roles and different ways.
