Abstract

Portrayals of a partner-seeking Pharaoh being deceived by the morally unsettling faux siblings, Abram/Abraham and Sarai/Sarah, are relatively rare. This is true especially within silent cinema. Even mainstream Abrahamic cinema tends to omit this storyline which highlights Pharaoh’s generosity/ gullibility/innocent suffering due to his refugees’ behavior there. As Campbell remarks, when Abraham and Sarah are ejected by the Pharaoh, a silentmovie caption would be obliged to read: “THE LIAR LEAVES” (35).
