Abstract

The book of Exodus’s tales are cinematic favorites due to the confrontation between Pharaoh (archenemy of the Divine) and Moses (God’s chosen deliverer of his people held in Egyptian bondage). Within silent cinema, the black-and-white short film Moïse sauvé des eaux (dir. Henri Andréani, 1911, FR; Moses Saved from the Waters), stars a corpulent, opulently dressed Pharaoh (Jean Jacquinet), with double crown, giving his daughter consent to name the baby she found in the river, Moses. In Das Weib des Pharao (dir. Ernst Lubitsch, 1922, DE; The Loves of Pharaoh), Pharao Amenes (Emil Jannings) wears fashionable cosmetics applied with delicate brushes.
