Abstract

Axial-flux machines offer advantages such as high power density, compact design, and potentially higher efficiency so that they have gained popularity in electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines, robotics, etc. While axial-flux permanent-magnet (PM) machines have been studied widely, the PM-free axial-flux machines have received limited research attention. This paper discusses the performance of PM-free axial-flux machines and compares them to axial-flux PM machines and PM-free radial-flux machines. It shows where PM-free axial-flux machines show potential performance advantages for transport electrification.
