Post-expansions

This chapter will explore a range of circumstances in which sequences are expanded beyond the end of two turns. A post-expansion occurs after a second, responsive, turn while still being part of the same sequence. Non-minimal post-expansions expand on a prior responsive turn while also being a first turn themselves. They treat the response as inadequate for sequence closure and add at least two further turns in the expanded sequence. This chapter provides an overview of non-minimal post-expansion sequences, some of the typical social actions accomplished in post-expansion, and how these actions are entwined with issues of dispreference, (moral) accountability, the maintenance of positive face, and preserving social solidarity between participants.
